Eighteen and Eight

ZiggyBackRiders... Helllloooo!! (to be read as Uncle Leo* would have said it on Seinfeld). I hope this finds you well. It has been eighteen months and eight days since my last post. It was a good one and I wanted to let it linger with you for a bit, but this was not quite what I had in mind!

We live in a world that is constantly changing, but in which some things tend to stay the same.

Evidence of the former: 1)The staff here at ZiggyBackRide was almost unable to access this blog because an email originally associated with the account is now defunct. Technological changes almost brought the Ride to (even more of) a screeching halt (than the lack of posts herein). 2) The Temple Israel Lady Rabs basketball team, whose victories and, more often, defeats, have been chronicled here, are now league champions. The mountain has been climbed. It's a different obscure Jewish teen basketball world than it's ever been.

Evidence of the latter: This glorious ride is cranking back up, just as it always has no matter how long the hiatus, to take you on journey after glorious journey. This time, though, the Ride is going to be going new places. Actual other places. You'll see. In the very next post, as a matter of fact, the stage will be set for our next chapter together. Stay tuned.

I hope you've had a wonderful eighteen and eight. I've missed you. It's good to be back. Let's ride!

*Among the many, many things that have transpired during the past eighteen months and eight days, the actor who played Uncle Leo passed away. Goood-bbyyyyyeeee. :(

I Could Be A World Champion

In about 36 hours, maybe a little less, we'll know (well, I'll know and then I'll probably share it here in about a month 'cause that seems to be what I do, at the moment) if I am a World Champion!

"For what championship is Michael competing?" you may wonder. "Is he competing against other regional Funniest Jew winners?" "Is there a world's laziest man competition?" "Worst housekeeper in the world?"

No, no, and no to those last three. But if you know of any of those competitions, please let me know. I've been practicing for all of them.

I am a member of Born in the Que-S-A, a team competing in the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, an incredibly smoky and fun festival on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Memphis. It started a couple of days ago and judging is tomorrow.

I don't really know how they judge and rank 200 or so different ribs, but hopefully they'll rank us first! I'll keep you posted. If we win, I assume the Memphis community will be throwing us a ticker-tape parade. Maybe we'll be invited to the White House. Who knows?!?

Now, please enjoy the story, told through facebook status updates, of my drive home from the first night of the contest. It is a little reminiscent of unexpected, undesired, unenjoyable late night car adventures of the past:

Dear President Bush: A Letter From All Of Us

Dear President Bush,

As I watched you depart the Capitol aboard a Marine helicopter, and then Andrews AFB aboard an Air Force jet*, I couldn't help but marvel at the array of emotions that must have been washing over and coursing through you. Among countless others, I imagine there was significant relief, as well as nostalgia, maybe some sadness, and probably some uncertainty (about what's next**). The moment made me consider my feelings toward you as your time in office has come to an end.

The servant and patriot in me say "thank you." Thank you for the work that you did as the leader of our nation. I often disagreed with your ways of thinking and doing, but I appreciate the personal sacrifices you and your family made in order for you to hold this pressure-filled and lonely office, and I appreciate the effort you were putting forth to serve our nation, and to keep it safe and prosperous.

The comedian in me says "come back!" I miss you already. You were very helpful to me as I embarked upon a "career" as a stand-up comic and for that I am grateful. You made statements like, "I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future." As much as I feel for your staffers for the years that statements like that must have taken off their lives, you often made my day (albeit in a bit of a sad way). I find it hard to believe that President Obama will be as funny as you were, so please, don't be a stranger.

The human being/citizen of the world in me says "finally!" Quite frankly, it often felt as though Godzilla was occupying the Oval Office and that anything that displeased the giant lizard-in-chief or got in its way would be destroyed. I suspect that America's standing in the minds and hearts of most of the world's citizens has jumped significantly since President Obama's election and during the transition. That excites me very much, so please, be a stranger.

The leader in me says "good riddance." For the last eight years, it killed me that you so often appeared unable to recognize or admit a mistake, or to change course when something wasn't working. I think you listened to the wrong people (or didn't listen to the right ones or weren't good at deciding whom to listen to) and I suspect that poor decisions were made in processes that will be embarrassing to us all when your staff goes on to other jobs and the stories of the Bush West Wing are shared.

The optimist (and Rob Schneider impersonator) in me says "you can do it!" As an ex-President, you have wonderful opportunities to serve as an ambassador of our country and of noble causes. You have the chance to shed light on and continue to impact the way our nation is governed. You are in a unique position to speak out when something needs to be said or to act when something important needs to be done. You may even be endowed with certain super powers!***

The dude in me says "let's hang out some time." Through it all, you've always seemed like a guy with whom it's probably a lot of fun to watch a game and eat some bbq.

Finally, the blogger in me says "stop by and read up!" Perhaps you will be visitor number 21,000! While in office, you provided much material for the staff here at ZiggyBackRide and for all of our visitors. It wouldn't have been the same without you. I mean, it wouldn't have been a whole lot different. But definitely a little bit.

Thanks, Mr. President, and best wishes to you and Mrs. Bush. Onward and upward!
Sincerely (I tried "Love" first, but I thought it seemed a bit much),
Z

*The flying machines formerly known as Marine One and Air Force One. When you are not the sitting President, those names are not given your transports as I understand it.
**Insert your own W Presidential Library joke here. The comedian in me thinks I'll be seeing him headlining comedy clubs all over for his speaking tour.
***If SNL should choose to revive its old Ex-Presidents cartoon shorts.

December Hush

The end of 2007 saw a flurry of activity here on ZiggyBackRide as I presented a November/December Rush - honoring the craptacularity of the movie "August Rush" with frequent (for me) blog posts. There were eight posts last December. This makes three for 12/08.

It has been a lackluster finish to a fine year here, but with good reason. My computer has been giving me the dreaded "blue screen." You know the one.

"Beginning dump of physical memory."
"Physical memory dump complete."

I'm not positive about that wording, but I know I see the word "dump" a couple of times and it always feels rather appropriate.

Anyway, we find ourselves now on the brink of another calendar year and inquisitive Riders can't help but wonder what might be in store. It is my distinct pleasure to share two items with you that shall certainly help define '09.

1) This site will soon welcome its 20,000th visitor. This approaching milestone shall stand as a celebration of victory and a beacon of hope for all.* Please be sure to let us know, using the comment feature, if the visitor counter to the right tells you that you are number 20K. History shall surely wish to record your important achievement.

2) In a harsh blow to New Year's Resolutions already in place, as well as to those yet to be made, a new breakfast item has been introduced, and will most certainly see wider distribution in the next twelve months. For those of you have not had the pleasure of making its acquaintance, allow me to introduce** the Dough-nini. This savory sandwich features sausage, egg, and cheese stacked tastefully and tastily between two grilled, glazed doughnuts. It is available now at a Mapco Mart just west of Nashville. I suspect it is available elsewhere, but that's where I saw it. It did not appear that they invented the culinary delight, nor that they had the sole right to offer it for sale. I suspect that 2009 shall be every bit "the year of the Dough-nini."

It could be worse. They say breakfast is the most important meal.

* All, in this case, refers to me and to anyone that either has nothing to celebrate and no hope or no standards limiting what he or she will celebrate or take inspiration from.
** I took a blurry picture of a photo advertisement for the Dough-nini at the Mapco Mart. If I can get a better photo of the sandwich or figure out how to use that one properly, I'll share it here so you can behold the sight that had me giggling for several miles on Interstate 40.

Welcome To The Season

Election season is here. Football season is here. ZiggyBackRide's figurative head is ready to explode with excitement.

I thought Barack Obama's address at the Democratic National Convention in Denver was perfect. I believe, more and more each day, that he is the kind of leader he says he is and is willing to truly champion the kind of change about which he speaks. Granted, I was a supporter already and this may just be convention-related euphoria, but I'm trying to see through that.

He talks about things that I believe very firmly: going beyond policy to look at what kind of person each of us is and what kind of communities we can build together; putting party aside in favor of what can really help people, make America stronger, and make the world better.

It is his glorious commitment to loftiness for which I believe we should all be striving that I anticipate will make this election season so frustrating. I have already heard commentary from people who say he's thinking too big and that lofty is nice, but you have to get things done. I'm hearing these things from people who would be first in line to say how great America is. Why, then, would they want a candidate for President of this great country to shoot for anything other than lofty? If you reach for the stars, you may not reach them, but you won't end up with a handful of dirt either. Let's not be afraid to aim high!

John McCain selected Sarah Palin, this morning, as his running mate. I look at the two of them and my first impression says they will not win. I'm looking forward to finding out more about her, though, and hearing what they both have to say next week in the Twin Cities.

My congratulations to both candidates for classy moves early on, though. We might be in for a great campaign. I hope so! We'll see over the next few months.

With all the political goings-on, there has been less time for pre-football season preparations, but the season is upon us. The Texas Longhorns play their first game tomorrow night against an upstart Florida Atlantic team who won their conference last year and whose coach recently questioned the toughness of the Longhorns. Let's get it on.

Yesterday, I went on my first football season shopping trip of the year, procuring orange food and drink for gamedays and it's all set up in front of the tv, ready for the game...

Now, I know what you must be thinking and, deep down, I know you're right. The queso is really more yellowish than orange, but I feel confident that it has something to add to the effort! No, I know what you're REALLY thinking and don't worry, I didn't leave the carrot chips sitting in front of the tv. They're in the fridge. Okay, okay, I know what you're REALLY, REALLY thinking and I think it's going to be okay. Gatorade G2 can be just as effective in helping the Horns as Diet Rite Tangerine and Diet Sunkist have been in seasons past.

For some clarification on just what on earth I'm talking about, see these previous posts.

Summer Vacation Is Over

Summer vacation is nearing its end for school children, teachers, and others who are fortunate enough to still have summer vacation. The end is particularly nigh in my part of the world, where schools will be back in session next week. A little early for my taste, but then, the classroom wasn't always my favorite place in the world.*

While the big break is nearing its end for the education world, it has reached its conclusion in the ZiggyBackRide world. After a long hiatus from writing on this site, the whole staff is back on the job, ready to fill you in on much that has happened in recent weeks and preparing to be your guide on the exciting journey that the remainder of 2008 is shaping up to be. The Olympic Games began today, a new college football season starts in three weeks, and Presidential campaign season is beginning in earnest. All of these are topics this blog has addressed in the past and these, among others, shall be covered as only ZiggyBackRide can cover them in the months to come.

Now, what have we missed in the time since ZBR's last stop?

In recent days, Morgan Freeman was involved in a serious accident that left him in critical condition in a Memphis hospital. The world-renowned actor and voiceover artist was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima at the time of the crash. If you had been asked to guess what kind of car this entertainment superstar was driving, how many guesses would you say you'd have needed to land on 1997 Nissan Maxima? I would have needed at least 4!

Other Morgan Freeman accident-related facts that the staff here can now confirm are as follows:

- Morgan Freeman is well on the road to recovery and has been released from the hospital.
- Asked about his immediate plans as he left the hospital, Freeman mentioned that he had decided to "...get busy livin', rather than get busy dyin'." He added a note of sincere gratitude to the medical staff for what he called "a common thread of exceptional care."**
- The lady in the car with Mr. Freeman at the time of the accident was not, as popular conjecture originally held, Miss Daisy.
- Hospital staff have reported that Freeman, though fully anesthetized, narrated his entire surgery, offering up helpful and soothing commentary at every turn.***

We'll certainly keep you updated on any further developments. Check back soon for stunning news regarding Me and My Purple Car, my season in Jewish softball, comedy fun, and more.

* The classroom was never my favorite place in the world. Though I have always enjoyed learning, I would have been happy if school had started sometime after Easter... if it had to start at all.
** quotes based upon Freeman's lines in The Shawshank Redemption and commercials for LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, respectively.
*** See post . Though I joke, I'm glad he's doing better!

Happy New Year!

Just taking a moment to wish all ZiggyBackRiders (and everyone who hasn't yet caught on) a very happy and healthy 2008. The staff here at ZiggyBackRide hopes you will have a safe and successful year, and that you will visit often and encourage others to join us here in our special place for observation, entertainment, education (I realize I am throwing this term around rather loosely), thought, and fun.

I'm not big on new years resolutions*, but I'm a big fan of reflection and improvement. May this new year bring you closer to your greatest potentialities, and may you become more and more capable of - and successful at - building the world of your dreams.

I'm looking forward to sharing the next 366 days** with you!

*Whatever you wish were better in your life, it's not 2007's fault!
**It's a leap year. Get ready for a long, LONG February!

Bicentennial Man

Welcome to the
ZiggyBackRide Bicentennial Celebration!!!

After a long wait, the 202nd post in the history of this historic blog has historically arrived! As you may know, the ZiggyBackRide Centennial was celebrated on the occasion of the 101st post, rather than the 100th, creating the tradition of the ZiggyBackRide hundred equaling 101 (much like a Baker's dozen is 13).
ZiggyBackPride: The Centennial Celebration was just over 20 months ago. Since then, the Ride has made 101 stops and has enjoyed the presence of some 8,800 riders. It has been an historic segment of the history historically presented herein.
In one of the ZBR (ZiggyBackRide) staff's favorite posts, we explored the universe in post #102 ("The Ultimate Insecurity") on February 1, 2006, and we explored less significant questions in posts like the one from Nov. 7, 2006.

We bade fond farewells to friends on Aug. 14, 2007 and Sept. 4, 2006, and we saw (parts of) the world on June 25th and July 3rd of 2007.

We suffered (May 18, 2006 and March 20th and May 17th of 2007) and we healed (June 13, 2006).

Greek was learned, comedy titles were earned.
BrickBreaker and Jewish men's league basketball were played
While hopes for basketball and baseball championships did fade.
Teen basketball and flag football got coached,
and one post, reprinted word for word, was totally poached.

We confronted superstitions on March 25th and October 22nd of 2006, and great tv and movie moments were relived on June 26th, July 28th, and August 22nd of this year. We celebrated America on July 4, 2006.

So much has happened. Look back. Read and enjoy. And don't ever forget where we have been together, for as it is said, "Those who forget the past are doomed to not know what the ZiggyBackRide is talking about when it repeats itself."

Now, we look forward to incredible things to come as we enjoy some historic scenes from the beginning of our history, our founding, 202 posts ago...
